This standard identifies and, defines those magnetic tape reel dimensions considered essential for the successful interchange of reels between equipments designed for those audio and other specialized recording applications utilizing tape of quarter-inch nominal width.

The plastic reels encompassed by this standard are hereby classified as "Type B", a classification primarily characterized by the size (nominal 5/ 16-inch diameter) of the center mounting hole.

This standard was prepared in order to promote the interchangeability of reels and to provide basic dimensions as guide lines for the development of future reel designs and the equipments upon which they are to be used.
