Introduction

This Guide has been developed to help managers, supervisors, and workers in their understanding of fall protection. Anyone who is required to use, purchase, maintain, or issue fall protection equipment may use this Guide, in conjunction with appropriate training, to assist in making fall protection decisions.

Falling accidents constitute one of the greatest hazards of the workplace. We all bear the burden of the loss of lives and well-being. As with all accidents, there are also financial repercussions. According to Statistics Canada, there were almost 100 000 reported lost time workplace injuries due to falls from elevation in Canada between 1991 and 1993.

It is important to note that this Guide is not intended as a substitute for appropriate fall protection training by qualified professionals, It is meant to provide guidance on the basic concepts of fall protection so that frontline managers, supervisors, and employees can contribute more effectively to safety in the workplace.
