Organization: SNZ
Publication Date: 9 February 2000
Status: active
Page Count: 71
scope:

This Standard sets out procedures for the measurement and assessment of noise from existing and proposed construction work, including maintenance and demolition work. The Standard recommends noise limitsforconstructionn oise and provides guidance concerning methodsof predictinga nd managing construction noise. The Standard should be read in conjunction with NZS 6801 :1999 Acoustics - Measurement of environmental sound.

The Standard can be used by local authorities in setting noise limits to reduce the likelihood of annoyance, nuisance and adverse health effects to people in the vicinity of construction work. It may be cited in local authority plans and resource consents as a method of measurement, assessment, and means of compliance with noise rules. Where there are no applicable rules, it can be used as aguide to appropriate numerical noise limits, measurement, assessment and noise mitigation measures. This Standard is also intended to enable developers, site operators and works contractors to manage noise emissions associated with construction work (including maintenance and demolition work).

This Standard covers sound from construction work which is of a limited duration. Where the sound from construction activity is part of the overall sound emission from an ongoing land use activity, then the sound should be assessed using NZS 6802 or other appropriate Standards.

C1.3

Examples of activities this Standard can be used to assess are:

(a) A new container crane at a port;

(b) A haul road for metal to be used in a batching plant during concrete work for a dam;

(c) A perimeter drain ora noise bund around an open cast mine or quarry orinstallaüon of relocatable noise barriers;

(d) Demolition of a structure, alteratiuns or additions to buildings, road reconstruction or re-alignment, Examples of activities to which this Standard is not intended to apply are:

(e) Ongoing activities from a site, for example quarryihg, landtills;

(f) Manufacture of plant, equipment or facilities on one site which are transpofled off the site, for example sites used for the ongoing construction ofpre-fabricated buildings or building components.

Risks to workers' health associated with noise induced hearing loss are outside the scope of this Standard. Effects of noise upon wildlife, stock, or domestic animals are not considered. This Standard does not cover vibration.

This Standard does not apply to emergency works as defined in the Resource Management Act 1991.
