This standard applies to equipment for three-phrase alternating-current (ac) systems having a system voltage above 1 kV nominal and, except for some definitions, includes only phase-to-ground insulation.

Purpose

The object of this standard is to guide the preparation of specifications for insulation of the various items of equipment in a given installation. For the tests prescribed in this standard, the values of the basic lightning impulse insulation levels (BILs) and the basic switching impulse insulation levels (BSLs) shall be chosen from the preferred values of this standard. Each standards developer shall be responsible for specifying the BILs, BSLs, and test procedures suitable for its equipment, incorporating the content of this standard where practical.
