This Part of the NES relates to the requirements for the manufacture, inspection and testing of 90/10 Copper Nickel Alloy Forgings, Forging Stock, Rods and Sections.
Forgings are placed in four classifications. Class 1 to 3 forgings are in descending order of quality assurance requirements. The classes are defined as follows:
Class 1 A forging whose failure would lead to uncontrollable flooding, the total immobilization of the vessel or serious hazard to personnel.
Class 2 A forging whose failure would lead to severe but controllable flooding, the serious disruption of weapon systems, main propulsion machinery, or its attendant auxiliaries including generators.
Class 3 A forging whose failure does not constitute an immediately significant hazard.
Class 4 A forging which is used for forging stock only.
Rods and sections are not classified.
