This document is to used as a design tool for lighting layouts. The rules of thumb provided are general guidelines; specific manufacturer's data should always be consulted. In addition to easily measured quantities such as light levels, the more qualitative aspects of lighting are covered and should be given consideration. The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Handbook is a very good reference and is the source for many of the recommendations. Additional guidance is contained in the Corps' Architect-Engineer Instructions, Chapter 12.
