Purpose: This Report sets forth the general philosophy and basic design guidance for using aircraft avionics equipment in simulators. It also specifies unique simulator functions that should be supported by avionics equipment. It represents the consensus of airlines, airframe manufacturers, avionics equipment designers, and simulator manufacturers. It is expected that this Report will promote mutual understanding among those parties concerned with the use of aircraft avionics equipment in flight simulators.

When aircraft avionics equipment (hardware or software) is used in flight simulators, it is desirable for the equipment to be compatible and identical to the aircraft fleet equipment. This ensures identical equipment response in the aircraft and simulator, concurrent version of the operational software/hardware, and a single source for spares.

Airframe manufacturers and avionics equipment designers are encouraged to take advantage of this guidance information starting with the earliest phases in the design of aircraft avionics equipment.
