scope:
This Defence Standard specifies the requirements for design, control and instrumentation, testing and installation of air compressors, air blowers and associated equipment for use in HM Surface Ships and Submarines.
For the purposes of this standard the air compressor associated equipment includes all of the equipment normally supplied by the compressor manufacturer, i.e. coolers, drainage, controls, drive arrangements, etc.
Figure 1 shows the Terminal Points (TP) of the compressor unit and associated equipment covered by this standard.
For the purposes of this standard compressors with a discharge pressure of over 30 bar are defined as High Pressure (HP), compressors with a discharge pressure of over 11 bar up to and including 30 bar are defined as Medium Pressure (MP) and those with a discharge pressure of 10 bar and below are defined as Low Pressure (LP).
Air compressing devices fitted as integral components of other major equipments, e.g. superchargers for diesel engines, are not covered by this standard.
NOTE 1 The after cooler, moisture separator and drains silencer may not be fitted on some very low pressure machines, e.g. blowers.
NOTE 2 Some small compressors may be totally air cooled (see Section 4.2.13).
NOTE 3 The compressor manufacturer may also supply an air dryer and/or pressure maintaining valve. TP = Terminal Point.
