scope:

This standard establishes the machine specifications for Group 3 facsimile apparatus for use over voice band analog circuits.

This standard is to facilitate interoperability between and among facsimile terminals within telecommunication facilities and systems of the Federal Government.

All Federal departments and agencies shall comply with this standard in the design, development, and procurement of facsimile terminals/systems.

For application of this standard within the Department of Defense, tactical users shall comply with the requirements contained in Military Standard 188-161. EIA Standard RS-465 has been adopted by the Department of Defense for nontactical use.
