FUZE CATALOG PROCUREMENT STANDARD AND DEVELOPMENT FUZE EXPLOSIVE COMPONENTS
Organization: | NPFC |
Publication Date: | 1 October 1985 |
Status: | active |
scope:
Fuze and fuze explosive components are presently cataloged in three military handbooks. Each handbook consists of one- or two-page data sheets containing basic engineering data on each non-nuclear fuze or fuze explosive component under the cognizance of the Army, Air Force, and Navy. The data sheets follow a standardized format. Indexes help locate specific data sheets and various tabular listings may be referenced for comparisons.
MIL-HDBK-145, Fuze Catalog, Procurement Standard and Development Fuzes, covers all fuzes currently under development, being procured, or stockpiled. The two-page data sheets include identification information such as cognizant activity, drawing, specification, and stock numbers; application; arming data; functioning data; physical dimensions; power supply; explosive train components; and a cutaway illustration. Future editions of this handbook will include storage and transportation safety requirements and a brief functional description of each fuze. Data sheets are organized by fuze application as follows: Projectiles, Bombs, Submunitions, Mines, Rockets, Missiles, Small Caliber, Grenades, and Miscellaneous.
MIL-HDBK-146, Fuze Catalog Limited Standard, Obsolescent, Obsolete, Terminated, and Canceled Fuzes, covers fuzes no longer being procured or stocked. There are two similar data sheet formats in this handbook. Generally, data sheets for older fuzes appearing in the former MIL-HDBK-137 Volumes 1 and 2, were reproduced intact in this handbook. More recent deletions from service inventory follow the same format as data sheets in MIL-HDBK-145. Chapter organization is the same as that for MIL-HDBK-145.
MIL-HDBK-777, Fuze Catalog, Procurement Standard and Development Fuze Explosive Components, covers all explosive components used in current fuzes, as well as items suitable for use in fuze designs. Each one-page data sheet contains identification information comparable to that for fuzes, functional and performance specifications, illustration, physical dimensions, and explosive composition. The handbook is organized by nomenclature, and includes primers, detonators, delays, leads, boosters, and actuators. Excluded are:
a. explosive components used in fuzes for nuclear ammunition,
b. explosive components used in foreign fuzes,
c. explosive components used in devices of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Energy,
d. commercial explosive components not having DoD source control drawings,
e. explosive components used in power sources,
f. explosive components dispersed throughout complex missile fuzing systems, and
g. obsolete or terminated explosive components, or items for which scant data exists.
MIL-HDBK-777 is intended to support MIL-HDBK-145 by documenting all items contained in fuze explosive trains. Items which are contained in procurement standard or development fuzes have been identified as standard. This catalog also contains items which have been used in fuzes which are now obsolete or terminated. Review of these designs has determined that they are still safe and reliable and they have been designated suitable for use in future fuze designs. Items which are used in other military ordnance having a potential applicability to fuze designs are also included as suitable for use. Data for all known obsolete or terminated fuze explosive components, including those formerly published in MIL-HDBK-137, Volume 3 are retained on the computer data base at he Naval Surface Weapons Center, White Oak, Maryland.
