SCOPE OF THE REVIEW

This monograph is intended to serve as a reference volume on the sources, chemistry, fate, aquatic and terrestrial toxicity, and wastewater treatment options for arsenic. The literature on environmental aspects of arsenic is massive. For example, computerized searches of the key information databases for the term "arsenic" indicated the following numbers of references: BIOSIS Previews (3,524 for the period 1985-96); CA Search (1,529 for 1957-96), Scisearch (5,654 for 1988-96), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA's) AQUIRE database (>1,000). As a result, the reader may need to consult more specific articles, including those that have been cited in text, and referenced at the end of each chapter.

Concentrations are reported throughout this report as they were cited in the original sources. It was not feasible to verify and convert all concentrations to a consistent atomic/formula basis (e.g., mg/kg as As vs. total compound).
