Page Count: 9
scope:

1.1 Scope

This publication identifies the ignition hazards involved in abrasive blasting of the exteriors of tanks used to store hydrocarbons at atmospheric pressure, including tanks whose vapor space contains a flammable mixture or a mixture that can become flammable when air is added. The term abrasive blasting includes sandblasting and similar cleaning techniques that use particles of abrasive materials jetted by compressed air.

This publication provides operational guidelines for procedures that significantly reduce ignition risks during abrasive blasting of hydrocarbon atmospheric storage tanks that may contain or can develop a flammable vapor space. It does not address requirements for personal safety and protective clothing, such as eye protection.
