The watch cap shall be colored black, bell shaped, pull on style. The crown shall be shaped of four (4) equal sections joined together by darts of equal length. The cap shall be either a simulated two ply construction, or a single ply construction.

The knitted yarn of the watch cap shall be made of fleece or pulled sheep's wool, or a combination of both, not lower in grade than 54's US Standard. The wool shall be free of reprocessed, reused, or waste wool. The thread for seaming and stitching the crown dart shall be cotton, colored black. The size and strength of the thread shall be sufficient to prevent breakage when the knit cap is laundered or worn.

When the simulated two ply construction is used, the stitch type for the body shall be half or full cardigan, with the crown a 1×1 rib. If a single ply construction is used, the body shall be half or full cardigan, with the crown and bottom a 1×1 rib, with the bottom having a non-ravelling edge.

A commercial type label is acceptable provided additional printed cloth labels containing the information in 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 are provided.

The cap shall have a label containing the contract number, NSN, and size, caught in the stitching of the crown.

The cap shall have an instruction label containing the information listed below. The label shall be caught in the stitching of the crown. Dry clean for best results. OR Hand launder in lukewarn water using a mild soap. DO NOT WRING OR TWIST Rinse in clean, cold water. Reshape and dry flat.

The cap shall conform to the measurements shown in Table I. A measurements are in inches. Table I - Finished measurements

Measurement shall be taken from the top center point of crown to bottom edge of crown (to rack stitching). 2/ For the single ply process, refer to Figure 2 for the following points of measurements: A. Measurement shall be taken from the top center point of crown to bottom edge of crown (to rack stitching). B. Measurement shall be taken from the bottom open edge of rack stitch to beginning of body stitching. C. Measurement shall be taken from the top center point of crown to bottom open edge of rack stitching, with the cap folded in half lengthwise so as to lie flat. D. Measurement shall be taken across the bottom open edge of cap.

After completion, the watch cap shall be thoroughly cleaned and all loose thread, lint and foreign matter removed. The cap shall be uniform in quality and shall be free from irregularities or defects which adversely affect performance, reliability or durability.

Other manufacturers may submit their styles to the procuring activity for evaluation by the specification preparing activity, and ultimate inclusion in this document, if approved.

During the solicitation phase, interested firms (including the manufacturers of the above approved styles), shall provide the procuring agency with two product demonstration models of the item they propose to furnish for evaluation. The two samples provided by the successful offerer shall be tagged and sealed. One shall be retained by the procuring agency and the other furnished the assigned QAR for use as a reference in performing the examination in paragraph 2.2 and the scoring of defects in design, material, and workmanship not otherwise classified herein.
