This chapter provides information for safe and proper potable water handling procedures aboard vessels. Bacteriological, physical, and chemical characteristics of potable water for the Navy are set forth in current BUMED/OPNAV Instructions. The basic principles outlined in the following sections will help prevent water-borne diseases.

All personnel concerned with loading, treatment, storage, distribution, and medical surveillance of potable water should be familiar with current OPNAV, Fleet, Type, Area, Force, and Command Instructions and Notices which supplement this chapter.
