The purpose of this Standard Method of Measurement is to proide a uniform basis forthe measurement of building worksand forthe presentationof unitsof measurement in Schedules (Bills) of Quantities and as such the method embodies the essentials of good practice.

The quantity surveyor is expected to use discretion and to adopt appropriate methods, provided the principles of measurement specified in this Standard Method of Measurement are observed and the information necessary for pricing made clear. Where such discretion has been exercised this shall be stated clearly within the relevant item or group of items.
