This Standard specifies the procedures f o r assessing the particulate contamination level in hydraulic fluids by the comparison slide method and consists of the following:

Preparing the sample slide from a contaminated membrane which has been obtained using the procedures laid down in DEF STAN 05 - 43.

b.Assessing whether the contamination level is acceptable by comparing the contamination present on the sample slide with that on the master slide specified for the system.

NOTE: DEF STAN O5 - 42 specifies a range of contamination classes for hydraulic systems. the contamination distribution, should be available for each A master slide, representing (visually). the contamination distrution, should be available for each class in the range. (But see also Annex A, clause 2c of DEF STAN 05-42).

APPLICABILITY

The procedures in this Standard are to be used when specified system contamination levels are required to be assessed by the comparison slide method. In general this method of assessment is suitable for :

Monitoring the contamination level in hydraulic systems in service.

Monitoring when flushing the system to assess the progress of the flushing operation.

Monitoring of Service support equipment.
