PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this document is to specify transmission performance requirements for UTP connecting hardware that are consistent with the three categories of UTP cable specified in EIA/TIA TSB-36 and to specify additional requirements for cross-connect jumpers and for cables used for UTP patch cords. This document contains the minimum set of transmission parameters and their associated limits necessary to assure that properly installed connectors will have minimal effects on cable performance. These requirements apply to only individual UTP connectors which include, but are not limited to; telecommunications outlets, patch panels, transition connectors and cross-connect blocks.

While the intent of this document is to minimize the effeds of UTP connectors on link performance, it should be noted that requirements for connector Categories 3, 4 and 5 are not sufficient in themselves to ensure required cabling system performance. Link performance also depends on cable characteristics (including cross-connect wire and patch cords), the total number of connections, and the care with which they are installed and maintained.
