scope:
General. This Military Standard establishes the requirements for paint schemes and markings to be applied to the exterior surfaces of U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps aircraft, including those procured for other government agencies and foreign countries under Navy contracts, in accordance with the directives of the Chief of Naval Operations. The requirements for paint schemes and markings include size, color, and approximate locations, where applicable, as shown in illustrations. This standard also provides a mechanism to obtain approval for deviation from these requirements.
Purpose. The purpose of this document is to standardize paint schemes and application of naval insignia and markings. In addition, this standard provides procedures to obtain approval for deviations from these requirements.
Foreign government aircraft. The requirements for the insignia and markings for foreign government aircraft procured under Navy contracts shall be as shown in Appendix A, except that the US. national insignia shall be replaced by that of the purchasing government, and naval insignia will not be applied. Foreign insignia, and flash insignia for vertical tail surface or rudders, and markings are shown in Appendix F. Insignia not shown will be furnished by the Naval Air Systems Command, as required. Paint schemes for foreign government aircraft are as specified by that foreign government and, as such, are not contained in this document.
Military aircraft used in research projects. The provisions of this standard are not applicable to military aircraft used for research projects. The color and marking of such aircraft is subject to Naval Air Systems Command approval in each case.
