NEBB - PROCEDURAL STANDARDS

Procedural Standards for Tab (Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing) Environmental Systems

active, Most Current
Organization: NEBB
Publication Date: 1 January 2005
Status: active
scope:

The 120 page, Seventh Edition, manual received a complete makeover to provide concise information and procedures in order to equip every user with the latest technology and techniques involved with the design, operation, servicing, and balancing of today's environmental systems. The entire manual was rewritten to reflect current and emerging technologies. Substantial changes were made to the instrumentation and testing, adjusting, balancing (TAB) report requirements.

Instruments used for TAB work are described in terms of function, as well as ownership requirements for NEBB certification. NEBB now allows instruments with multiple capabilities to be applied to more than one function. In addition to minimum range and accuracy, instruments must now meet certain resolution requirements. Calibration requirements also are covered.

Standards for reports and forms are presented in "shall, should and may" language to clearly define minimum requirements of a NEBB-certified TAB report. A specific list of report data and information is presented for each system component (fan, VAV box, pump, etc.) as well as common report items. A NEBB-certified report contains at minimum all of the "shall" data.

Other prominent features include:

• TAB definitions and terminology

• An overview of the NEBB program including quality control and compliance requirements

• Design and construction team responsibilities which delineates the role of the engineer, general contractor, mechanical contractor, controls contractor, and NEBB certified TAB firm

• Basic TAB procedures - techniques for measurement of temperature, pressure, velocity and quantities, in various systems, including electrical measurements

• Preliminary TAB procedures - planning and pre-TAB con

• Air system TAB - fan testing, plus constant volume, multi-zone, induction unit,VAV, dual duct, underfloor plenum, return air and exhaust systems. Also, included are laboratory fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, and industrial exhaust systems, plus stairwell and elevator pressurization testing

• Hydronic TAB procedures

• Outdoor air ventilation procedures - direct measurement and mixed air temperature methods

• Appendices - overview of TAB instrumentation, sample pre-TAB checklist, and sample TAB specification

• Index

This "how-to" manual was written by NEBB Testing and Balancing Committee members who have extensive experience in balancing work. It is designed to meet the stringent requirements of those directly involved in TAB of environmental systems, plus it serves as an excellent reference text.
