Preface

This new edition of CSA Standard SI57 (now CAN3-S157-M) supersedes the previous editions published in 1962 and 1969.

With two thrusts, one to metrication and the other to the limit states approach to structural design, revisions to CSA Standards S157-1969, The Structural Use of Aluminum in Buildings, and S190-1968, Design of Light Gauge Aluminum Products, had become essential.

Because there is an evident continuum between the strength of the many aluminum products, advantage was taken of this opportunity to effect three major changes:

(a) combining the two codes to give a single uniform treatment;

(b) casting the design expressions in a non-dimensional form to permit evaluation in any system of units;

(c) giving limit state expressions, thereby permitting the application of the Standard to any aluminum item by adopting the appropriate load factors.

It is expected that the Standard will find application in building and building accessories, general structures, transmission and other towers, EOT and boom cranes, vehicles and industrial equipment. Cast products are not included.

Part 2 covers the additional requirements for aluminum applications in buildings.

Those designing under this Standard shall not use CSA Standard S157-1969 or S190-1968 (now withdrawn). This will avoid any conflicts arising from different interpretations of the safety margins in working stress design and limit states design.

This Standard was prepared by the CSA Technical Committee on Strength Design in Aluminum under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Structures (Design), and was formally approved by these Committees. It has been approved as a National Standard of Canada by the Standards Council of Canada. December, 1983
