Organization: NPFC
Publication Date: 2 June 1989
Status: inactive
Page Count: 35
scope:

This specification establishes the general requirements for positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) and avalanche photodiode (APD) fiber optic detectors. These optical detectors contain optical windows or integrally attached pigtail fibers for coupling optical power from the fiber optic link fiber into the detector. Pigtail fibers specified herein are mechanically and optically compatible with the fibers specified in DOD-F-49291.

Fiber optic detectors covered by this specification should be classified by the sealing level types specified in 1.2.1, by the wavelength class specified in 1.2.2, and by the optical coupling style specified in 1.2.3 (see 3.1 and 6.1).

The sealing level type is identified by one of the following type designators:

Type A: Hermetic.

Type B: Nonhermetic.

The wavelength class is identified by one of the following class designators:

Class 1: Wavelength operation of 820 to 910 nanometers (nm).

Class 2: Wavelength operation of 1,250 to 1,350 nm.

Class 3: Wavelength operation of 1,400 to 1,600 nm.

The optical coupling style should be identified by one of the following style designators:

Style 1: Pigtail fiber with 50/125 micrometer (µm) core/cladding diameter.

Style 2: Pigtail fiber with 100/140 µm core/cladding diameter.

Style 3: Optical window or lens. Beneficial comments (recommendations, additions, deletions) and any pertinent data which may be of use in improving this document should be addressed to: Naval Sea Systems Command (SEA 55Z3), DOD Standardization Program and Documents Division, Department of the Navy, Washington, DC 20362-5101, by using the self-addressed Standardization Document Improvement Proposal (DD Form 1426) appearing at the end of this document or by letter.

intended Use:

Optical detectors specified herein and in the specification sheets are PIN or APD optical detectors and are intended for use in general military fiber optic applications.
