scope:
This specification covers various types of axes for chopping and splitting wood, clearing land of under brush, fire fighting and a utility tool for use on lifeboats and liferafts (see 6.1).
Federal specifications do not include all types and classes of the commodity indicated by the titles of the specifications, but cover only those generally used by the Federal Government.
Axes shall be of the following types, classes, designs, and styles, as specified (see 6.2):
Type I.-Chopping. Class 1.-Single bit. Design A.-Men's (Dayton pattern). Design B.-Boys'. Design C.-House. Design D.-Hunter's. Design E.-Belt. Style 1.-Wood handle. Style 2.-Steel handle. Class 2.-Double bit. Design A.-Men's (Western pattern). Design B.-Cruiser (Crown or Mich- igan pattern). Design C.-Swamping. Type II.-Pick head (fire or fireman's). Type III.-Mattock head (Pulaski).
intended Use:
All type I axes, except class 1, design E, style 2 are intended for general utility use in forestry work.
