PREFACE

The use of standardized item descriptions is essential for efficient supply operations of the Government. It is considered logical for suppliers to originate descriptions of those items which they supply. The purpose of this Standard is to provide the necessary guides to assure uniformity in the preparation of these descriptions. Suppliers of the Government are therefore required to use the approved item names and to prepare item descriptions in accordance with this Standard for those items of supply so specified in contracts or other procurement documents.

This Standard contains approved item names, description patterns, reference drawings, and related data, together with the rules necessary for the preparation of item descriptions. It is divided into six parts:

Part I - Rules for Preparation of Item Descriptions

Part II - Alphabetic Index of Names to Description Patterns

Part III - Numeric Index of Description Patterns to Item Names

Part IV - Description Patterns

Part V - Reference Drawings

Part VI - General Reference Data

Part I contains the detailed rules, fons, and procedures which shall be adhered to by Government suppliers in the preparation of item descriptions.

Part II is an alphabetic list of basic names, item names, and colloquial names. In order to distinguish these kinds of names a different typographic treatment has been used for each. Basic names are in upper and lower-case letters; item names are in uppercase letters; colloquial and other cross-referenced names are in lower-case letters; cross references are in italics. Examples:

Resistor (basic name) INDICATOR, STANDING WAVE (item name)

condenser - see Capacitor (reference to basic name) vacuum tube - see ELECTRON TUBE (reference to item name)

Item names have been delimited where it has been deemed necessary to indicate the nature and extent of the items which are to be grouped together for cataloging and other supply purposes. Such delimitations are to be considered as supply cataloging delimitations, and are not necessarily to be construed as explanations of the theory of operation or construction of the items in a strict engineering sense.

Where a basic name is defined or otherwise delimited, each concept of the basic name is numbered. In item names developed from the basic name this number appears in parentheses immediately following the basic name. in some cases where the item name has two modifiers, it has been found desirable to delimit' the concept inherent in the basic name plus one modifier. In these cases the concept represented by the basic name plus one modifier is numbered, and the number appears in parentheses immediately following the first modifier in the derived item names. When a number appears in parentheses in an item name, following the basic name or following the úrst modifier, the item description writer must refer to the indicated basic name or the basic name plus one modifier in order to understand the concept which is inherent in the total concept of the item name.
