This Defence Standard specifies the standards of cleanliness to be achieved and maintained in compartments on Surface Ships and Submarines under construction. It does not cover the particular requirements for cleaning, or maintaining the internal cleanliness of machinery, equipment or systems, nor the workshops in wich they are manufactured or repaired.

For in-service ships BR 8593(8) provides a code of practice for clean refits/DEDs.
