Safety of Information Technology Equipment, Including Electrical Business Equipment

This standard is applicable to information technology equipment, including electrical business equipment and associated equipment, with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V and designed to be operated under conditions of normal use in non-hazardous locations in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.
This standard is also applicable to such equipment designed and intended to be connected directly to a TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK, and forming part of a subscriber's installation, regardless of ownership and of responsibility for installation and maintenance.
This standard specifies requirements intended to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury for the OPERATOR and layman who may come into contact with the equipment and, where specifically stated, for SERVICE PERSONNEL.
This standard is intended to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons associated with installed equipment, whether it consists of a system of interconnected units or independent units, subject to installing, operating and maintaining the equipment in the manner prescribed by the manufacturer.
Examples of equipment which is within the scope of this standard are:
Data and text processing equipment, personal computers, visual display units, data preparation equipment, data terminal equipment, data circuit terminating equipment (e.g. modems), facsimile equipment, typewriters, calculators, accounting and book-keeping machines, cash registers, point of sale terminals, paper tape readers and punchers, staplers, duplicators, (including those intended primarily for sizes larger than A3 as specified in ISO Standard 216) copying machines, erasers, pencil sharpeners, mail processing machines, document shredding machines, magnetic tape handlers, motor-operated files, dictation equipment, micrographic office equipment, monetary processing machines, electrically operated drawing machines (plotters), paper trimmers (punchers, cutting machines, separators), paper jogging machines, postage machines, teleprinters, electronic scales, photo printing equipment and overhead projectors.
This list is not intended to be comprehensive, and equipment that is not listed is not necessarily excluded from the scope.
Equipment complying with the relevant requirements in this standard is considered suitable for use with process control equipment, automatic test equipment and similar systems requiring information processing facilities. However, this standard does not include requirements for performance or functional characteristics of equipment.
Requirements additional to those specified in this standard may be necessary for:
(a) equipment intended for operation while exposed, for example, to extremes of temperature; to excessive dust, moisture, or vibration; to flammable gases; to corrosive or explosive atmospheres;
(b) electromedical applications with physical connections to the patient;
(c) equipment intended to be used in vehicles, on board ships or aircraft, in tropical countries, or at elevations greater than 2 000 m;
(d) equipment subject to transient overvoltages exceeding those for Installation Category II according to IEC 664; additional protection might be necessary in the mains supply to the equipment;
(e) equipment intended for use where ingress of water is possible; for guidance on such requirements, and on relevant testing, see annex T. Note: Attention is drawn to the fact that authorities of some countries impose additional requirements.
This standard does not apply to:
(a) support equipment, such as air conditioning, fire detection or fire extinguishing systems; power supply systems, such as motor-generator sets, battery back-up systems and transformers, which are not an integral part of the equipment; building branch wiring;
(b) equipment which depends on a TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK as its only source of electrical power for its operation, and passive devices requiring no source of electrical power.
