scope:
This NES relates to the requirements for the manufacture,
inspection and testing of high strength copper-nickel-mangan
Forgings are placed in four classifications. Class 1 to 3 forgings are in descending order of quality assurance requirements. The classes are defined as follows:
Class 1-A forging whose failure would lead to uncontrollable flooding, the total immobilization of the vessel or serious hazard to personnel.
Class 2-A forging whose failure would lead to severe but controllable flooding, the serious disruption of weapon systems, main propulsion machinery, or its attendant auxiliaries including generators.
Class 3-A forging whose failure does not constitute an immediately significant hazard.
Class 4-A forging which is used for forging stock only.
Rods and sections are called for in two grades as follows:
Grade 1-Material for high integrity applications (eg 1st level system in Nuclear Submarines).
Grade 2-Normal grade material.
Note: Material to this NES must not be used in any application where the temperature exceeds 300ºC. In addition it must be neither welded nor brazed.
