This guide applies to petroleum oils used as lubricating and control fluids with steam turbine systems in power plants.

This guide may also be applied to petroleum oils used in gas or hydraulic turbines and in other auxiliary power plant equipment where appropriate.

The purpose of this guide is to assist the power equipment operator in evaluating the conditions of the oil in his equipment and to help him in his efforts to maintain oil in serviceable condition. To this end, the guide discusses the causes of oil deterioration and recommends standardized tests and evaluation procedures. Guidelines are also given regarding the type of corrective action that should be taken to achieve maximum service life.
