INTRODUCTION
The list is divided into sections on pre-treatment primers, primers, finishing paints, painting systems, lacquers and varnishes. Where available general purpose and special purpose materials are grouped separately in each section. DTD paints included in the list are restricted to those which find uses for purposes other than aircraft.
A Treatment Coding System is given in this Section. It is similar to that in Sections I and II (see Part One, Introduction, paragraphs 2, 3 and 4). A paint system normally consists of primer, intermediate coat(s) and finishing coat(s) and these are sometimes preceded by a pre-treatment primer. In most cases the primers have been coded separately as the choice of primer will depend upon a number of factors, e.g. substrate and its pre-treatment, conditions of use of the part etc. Intermediate and finishing coat(s) are normally coded under one Treatment No. but the number of coats of each to be used will again depend on a number of factors, particularly the degree of protection required.
The colours of the intermediate and finishing coats should be clearly specified quoting the appropriate BS colour numbers from BS 381C: 1964 'Colours for specific purposes' or exceptionally other colour specifications. If the appropriate undercoat colour is not specified, the nearest, but lighter colour to the finishing coat should be selected from the colour specifications
