The standard specifies a data structure known as the SGML Document Interchange Format (SDIF). It enables the separate entities of a document conforming to ISO 8879 to be combined into a single datastream for interchange in a manner that will permit their separation by the recipient. SDIF also allows related documents, such as covering letters, transmittal forms, catalogue cards or formatting procedures to be included in the data stream.
