This standard elaborates the methods used to determine the physical and chemical properties of paint, varnish, lacquer, and related materials to evaluate their conformance to Federal and military specifications. The purpose of this standard is to eliminate unnecessary or undesirable variation in general inspection, sampling, and testing procedures. Although this standard does not include test methods that are specific and limited to a particular item, it does include methods not now in common use, the premise being that with a greater availability these methods will become more popular. This standard or methods contained herein shall become a portion of any particular specification. If any variation or modifications of the methods in this standard are required by any specification, the procedures listed in the specification will take preference. Any conflict between this standard and any particular specification shall be resolved in favor of the specification.
