1. Scope

1.1 This test method covers the spectrographic analysis of carbon and low-alloy steel for the following elements in the concentration ranges (Note 1) shown:

NOTE 1--The concentration ranges of the elements listed have been established through cooperative testing of secondary standards. The scope is underwritten by available spectrochemical standards.

1.2 This test method covers control analyses with an alternative procedure for referee analyses.

1.3 The metallurgical state of certain alloys may have an influence on the spectral radiation. In these instances all samples and standards must be in the same metallurgical state, Steels with alloy contents below 2.0 or 3.0 % do not generally show such effects; however, high-carbon steel definitely has this characteristic.

1.4 Observe caution with compositions that are unusual for a given laboratory. One element may have an influence on the radiation of another element. Tests may be required to determine whether such interrelations exist between elements in the samples under analysis. When such effects are present, use standards that more closely match the composition of the samples.
