The scope of this document shall be to standardize basic composition, winding method, and dimensions of magnetic tape used in interchange instrumentation applications.

Instrumentation applications in this connection shall be defined as all of those in the general field of data recording except those purely digital .applications relating to data interchange where the end product is digital data in a format to be read directly by a digital computer.

At the time of its preparation no other industrial standards of comparable scope were in existence.
