Recommendation GSM 02.17 states the basic concept of a split of the MS into a removable SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) which contains all network related subcriber information and a ME (Mobile Equipment) which is the remaining part of the MS, and realizes all the functions common to all GSM subscribers.
