This specification covers the general requirements for electrical solenoids used to actuate various devices through the conversion of electrical signals into mechanical motion. These solenoids are of the axial stroke type in which the mechanical force is direct movement in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the coil, and the rotary stroke type.

Solenoids are classified as follows:

SYMBOL TYPE DUTY ROTATION I Pull Continuous - II Pull Intermittent - III Push Continuous - IV Push Intermittent - V Rotary Continuous Clockwise VI Rotary Intermittent Clockwise VII Rotary Continuous Counterclockwise VIII Rotary Intermittent Counterclockwise

The military part number shall consist of the letter "M," the basic number of the specification sheet, and an assigned dash number (see 3.1) as shown in the following:
