PREFACE
This glossary is compiled by direction of the Military Committee and with the approval of the NATO Council. Its purpose is to standardize terminology used throughout NATO, thereby promoting mutual understanding. The definitions contained herein reflect current NATO
use and do not modify or establish NATO policy and doctrine.
The glossary is published in the two official languages of NATO, English
and French. The terms and definitions contained herein have been approved by all NATO nations.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary (Eighth Edition) is the reference for English in AAP-6. Le Petit Robert, Dictionaire alphabetique et analogique de la langue francaise (Edition 1988) is the reference for
French in AAP-6.
The glossary is divided into five main parts.
Part 1. Policy and Procedures for NATO Terminology Standardization
Programme.
Part 2. NATO Agreed terms and definitions of military significance in English (white paper). Corresponding French terms are shown immediately following the English terms e.g., no-fire line/ligne de securite.
Part 3. NATO Agreed terms and definitions of military significance in French (green paper). Corresponding English terms are shown immediately following the French terms e.g.
redressement/rectifi
Part 4. Index of NATO Agreed Documents Containing Specialist Terms and
Definitions.
Part 5. Under limited distribution as supplement to AAP-6 an index of Specialist Terms from NATO Agreed Documents.
