Monomethylhydrazine (MMH, CH3N2H3) is used as an aerospace fuel and an antioxidant in industrial processes and is used in the production of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. MMH is a strong reducing agent, weakly alkaline, and very hygroscopic. MMH readily reacts with a variety of organic, inorganic, and metallic compounds. The principal MMH reactions of interest include decomposition reactions, reaction with dinitrogen tetroxide, reaction with carbon dioxide, and reaction with oxygen. Its chemical characteristics are such that it presents fire, explosion, material compatibility and safety hazards for the user to evaluate. For example, Table 1 gives relative values for the explosion potential (Rase 1977) for several materials and MMH. Clearly MMH needs to be treated as a hazardous material.
