This NES specifies the requirements for rechargeable stored pressure metal-bodied fire extinguishers containing an extinguishing medium of water and Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), which can be expelled by an internal pressure.
Requirements are also specified for performance in extinguishing test fires of either Class A (solid materials) or Class B (liquid or liquifiable solids) according to the classification of BS 4547 and for the assignment of test fire performance ratings. The use and application of these ratings are explained in BS 5306 Part 3.
The extinguishers are to be suitable for surface ships, submarines, RFAs and RMAS craft. It is to be incumbent on the manufacturer to ensure that there are no conflicts with Department of Trade rules and as such the extinguishers are to be accompanied by a valid Department of Trade "Certificate of Inspection and Test" to certify the acceptability of the extinguisher for the purpose of the Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Regulations 1985.
