scope:
To set forth the overall requirements for the creation and management of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) applications. This specification defines performance characteristics for the following SGML applications:
a. Document type declaration.
b. Document Type Definition (DTD).
c. Document instance.
d. Formatting Output Specification Instance (FOSI).
SGML shall be used:
a. To describe the logical structure of textual information in an unambiguous grammar.
b. To describe the presentation of textual information in an unambiguous grammar.
c. To assure automated quality control over adherence to that structure.
d. To deliver and store textual information in an easily maintained and updated form.
