This test method covers the determination of water in the range from 0.02 to 5.0 percent in crude oils. Mercaptan and sulfide (S+ or H2O) sulfur are known to interfere with this test method (see 10.9.5).

This test method can be used to determine water in the range of 0.005 to 0.02 percent, but the effects of the mercaptan and sulfide sulfur interference at these levels have not been determined.

This test method is intended for use with standard coulometric Karl Fischer reagents.

This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use (see Appendix B). It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
