The electric wires covered by this specification are intended for use in any application where their performance characteristics are required. The wires are suitable for installation on aerospace electrical systems within the limitations of applicable performance requirements.

Temperature ratings as specified in specification sheets pertaining to this specification represent the maximum permissible operating temperature of the conductor. The maximum ambient temperature should be the rated maximum conductor temperature of the wire diminished by the operating rise in temperature of the conductor.

The conductor sizes and the corresponding wire size designations of this specification are in accordance with established usage for stranded copper conductors for hookup wire in the electronic and aircraft industries (see ASTM Standard B286-70, American Standard C7.39-1970). It should be noted that these sizes and size designations are not identical with American Wire Gage (AWG) sizes for solid wire and strands. The diameters and cross-sectional areas of the stranded conductors of this specification are, in most sizes, only roughly approximate to those of AWG solid conductors of the same numerical size designation.
