APPROACH AND SCOPE

The basic approach for this project initially focused on the following:

1) Review of existing data in API files from previous Task Group work

2) Review of testing equipment precision/accuracy

3) Review of each test procedure and determination of test precision for one lab/one operator

4) Review of each test procedure for possible sources of error and areas for improvement

5) Measurement of between-labs test precision (beginning with barite, bentonite, and NT bentonite)

As the project progressed, information developed led to additional tasks:

1) Calibration workshops on viscometers, thermometers, and filter presses

2) Calibration procedure draft for 13A

3) Quantitative measures of some variables effect on results

4) Calibration procedures for 75 μm and 45 μm sieves

The project began by studying each test procedure for precision, studying equipment for sources of variation, and researching test procedures for possible ways of improvement. It continued by conducting calibration workshops for viscometers, filterpresses, and thermometers; and culminated with interlaboratory studies to determine between-laboratory test precision.

The interlaboratory studies were limited to labs that routinely run 13A specification tests and are proficient in the procedures. It included plant labs, research labs, and an independent testing lab.
