scope:
This Standard relates to a system of air-drying paints suitable for painting Service vehicles and equipment to provide a high gloss, heat resisting finish.
Vehicles painted with the complete system are expected to meet the Service Department's requirement for operational use and have a minimum useful life of 4 years in temperate climates, or 2 years in tropical climates.
The paint system is intended for application to suitable prepared ferrous surfaces and to aluminium surfaces, which have been pretreated with paint complying with DEF STAN 80-15.
In some circumstances this paint system may not be suitable for use on vehicles or equipment which will be used or stored under conditions entailing partial or intermittent immersion in water.
The normal paint system applied to steel or pretreatment primed aluminium will consist of:
priming paint to a dry film thickness of 30 ± 5 μm;
undercoat to a dry film thickness of 25 ± 5 μm;
finishing paint to produce a total dry film thickness for the complete system of not less than 110 μm.
Special approval may be given to spray the coats of finishing paint wet-on-wet if it can be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Approving Authority that this does not result in an inferior paint system.
