The purpose of this standard is to achieve diskette interoperability across Department of Defense (DOD) messaging systems by establishing standard diskette message file formats.

The requirements of this standard apply to all Departments and Agencies of the DOD using, developing, supporting, or otherwise involved with DOD messaging systems which employ messages residing on magnetic diskette storage media.

This standard is restricted for use with the MS-DOS 2.0 or higher Microcomputer Operating System (or equal) and its associated diskette format scheme and file naming conventions.
