scope:
This specification covers woodworkers' chisels, gouges, and slicks normally used by cabinetmakers, patternmakers, and carpenters for carving, paring, turning, shaping, and finishing various wood products.
Federal specifications do not include all varieties of the commodity as indicated by the title of the specification, or which are commercially available, but are intended to cover only those generally used by the Federal Government.
Chisels, gouges, and slicks shall be of the following types, classes, and styles, as specified (see 6.2):
Type I - Chisels.
Class 1 - Framing, socket.
Class 3 - Butt, bevel edge.
Class 4 - Firmer.
Style A - Bevel edge, wood handle.
Style C - Bevel edge, plastic handle.
Class 8 - Paring, tanged.
Style A - Straight shank.
Class 9 - Turning, tanged.
Style A - Square point.
Style B - Round point.
Style C - Spear point.
Style D - Regular skew.
Type II - Gouges.
Class 1 - Firmer, socket or tang.
Style A - Outside bevel.
Style B - Inside bevel.
Class 2 - Turning, tanged.
Type III - Socket slicks (oval back).
intended Use:
Type I, classes 1, 3, 4, and 8 chisels are used for general purpose paring, cutting and chiseling of wooden blocks and shapes. Chisel handles are designed to withstand hammer blows.
