FOREWORD

This is one of the volumes (see backside of cover for listing) which comprise the FLIS Procedures Manual. It is published under the authority of Department of Defense Directive 4100.39-M. Federal Logistics System (FLIS).

1. Under the Defense Integrated Data System (DIDS, all data was input to the DLIS Total Item Record (TIR using coding defined by Data Record Numbers (DRN's) and stored in limited arrangements. Characteristic/user data was input to, stored and retrieved from 'tables' known as ″DIDS Segments″. Formal programs had to be developed for each data input or extract from this system. Only the programming staff knew where the information was stored and how to get to it.

The modernized system was eight years in development, todays physical relational data base was derived from the Logical Data Model provided to the contractor. Data in the modernized system continues to be stored using coding defined by DRN's, which can be viewed as groups of DB2 Elements. With minor exceptions, most data remains unchanged, but some DRN's have been expanded and split to allow greater flexibility in data storage and retrieval. i.e., for example, FSC 5865 for old DRN 3990 (ASGD-FSC) is now stored as DRN 3994 (ASGD-FSG)(58) and DRN 3996 (ASGD-FSC-WI-FSG) (65). Other changes include replacing the limited number of TIR segments by grouping DB2 data elements into approximately 1000 relational table groups. Each grouping of relational data has an assigned group table name and group table number. DB2 Elements are used to link to and extract other unique data stored under a different Group Table Name. The most major change is that responsibility for knowing where and how data is stored or extracted has been shifted from the programmer to the userAND informal user developed programs extract, process and format the data.
