INTRODUCTION AND SCOPE

The Aluminum Industry has recognized the importance of fracture toughness as one parameter for the selection of materials for fracture critical applications and, in some specific instances, for designing fracture critical components. Therefore, for the benefit of both producers and users, the Industry has established a program to develop statistically reliable minimum values. of appropriate fracture toughness indices, and has formulated a specific and consistent position regarding the application of toughness parameters in material procurement and quality control.

It is the purpose of this document to present the Aluminum Industry's position on matters related to fracture toughness testing, quality control and material availability, including:

This issue is the second revision of Document T-5, originally published in 1974, and includes major updating of the sections on classification now based on products and historical applications rather than on alloys, and on fracture toughness test procedures which are now covered by reference to national specifications rather than being covered in detail.
