Introduction

CSA Special Publication Z243.57-1991 is a three-part glossary compiled by the SC27 WG1 Ad Hoc Group on Vocabulary from NB and WG expert contributions on terminology. Part 1 contains the information technology security definitions believed to be most appropriate for SC27 work. Part 2 contains alternatives to some of the terms in Part 1. Part 3 contains the acronyms used, references, and cross-references. Any term in Part 1 with an alternative definition in Part 2 is marked with "+". The number of "+'s" indicates the number of alternative definitions.

The criterion for inclusion of a term in Parts 1 and 2 was that the term should originate from a stable and credible source. (In ISO standards this means a definition at the D1S or IS level.) In addition to Parts 1 and 2, an annex of additional definitions that may be useful has been included. These additional definitions are drawn from a variety of sources but have not yet gained the level of stability or general acceptance of the terms included in Parts 1 and 2.

This Special Publication is intended to assist Standard developers by providing a reference guide to already established definitions accepted in the IT security community. SC27 WGs are encouraged to use these definitions wherever possible and to avoid defining terms with the same titles but different meanings. However, WGs are not precluded from defining their own IT security terms if there is no adequate or appropriate term in this Special Publication.

After being developed as a Canadian document, this Special Publication was submitted to ISO/JTC1/SC27 as a contribution towards the development of an ISO security glossary. In April 1991, the Canadian contribution, with only minor changes, was adopted by SC27 as a standing document. CSA Special Publication Z243.57-1991 aligns completely with the SC27 standing document.
