INTRODUCTION

The aim of this Standard is to provide quality assurance procedures for the manufacture of major gun and mortar forgings to ensure that the Designer's requirements are achieved consistently, with the minimum expenditure of material, time and money. The basis for control is approval by the Quality Assurance and Design Authorities, of the methods for manufacture, inspection and testing, and assessment of product quality by cutting up and testing pre-production or prototype forgings. The quality of production is to be assured by quality control, inspection and testing procedures agreed between the Contractor, Quality Assurance and Design Authorities, and defined in this Standard. At the discretion of the Quality Assurance Authority, where confidence in the quality and uniformity is shown to be in doubt, or where efficiency of inspection is in question, Quality Audit tests may be made or, very exceptionally, the cut-up testing may be repeated. Forgings rejected on evidence obtained by Quality Audit tests shall be the financial responsibility of the Contractor. The Contractor will not be required to provide additional material for the Quality Audit tests since such tests may be made on the test material normally provided for re-testing foliowing repeated heat treatment.

This Standard defines the conditions of supply and inspection of steels and forgings for major gun and mortar components. It includes a schedule of compositions and properties, and it covers the supply of ingots, blooms, annealed forgings for machining and final heat treatment, and hardened and tempered gun and mortar forgings which have passed acceptance tests as laid down in this Standard.

This Standard is to be used with the appropriate forging drawing. Together they contain the necessary technical information required for tender or contract purposes. The Standard recognises that where the drawing provides special or additional requirements, the drawing requirements are over-riding.
