scope:

Purpose:

This instruction establishes the Confined Space Policy at GSFC, including Greenbelt, Wallops Flight Facility, and remote locations. This instruction shall apply to civil servant, contractor, and other operations at these facilities. This instruction applies to all operations involving permit-required confined spaces, such as, but not limited to, tanks, vaults, and underground piping or tunnel systems.

This instruction is based upon compliance with NASA Health Standard NHS/IH-1845.2 "Entry Into and Work In Confined Spaces" and the newly-issued OSHA 29CFR 1910.146 "Permit-required Confined Spaces." In addition, this instruction is based upon substantial compliance with Maryland OSH and Virginia OSH regulations.
