A pump, to quote Webster in part, is "A device or machine that raises, transfers, or compresses fluids..." the word "fluid" is defined as "Having particles which easily move and change their relative position without a separation of teh mass, and which easily yield to pressure; capable of flowing." Even though there is a firm definition for the terms used, colloquialism and precedent deviate considerably.
